I am sometimes wary about “natural” products, but Burt’s Bees is a line I trust and I got a chance to learn more about the sensitive line of products and speak with Dr. Zoe Draelos.
Let’s take a look at some of the products firs and then discuss my interview with Dr. Zoe Draelos and the recent study conducted by Burt’s Bee.
The Facial Cleanser is a soap-free one that is supposed to moisturize sensitive skin while gently cleansing it without over-drying or causing redness or irritation. It also contains Quillaja (an extract from soap bark trees) to provide natural foaming lather; and Yucca (a desert plant high in saponins, which are traditional cleansing agents. The Daily Moisturizer is a day cream that is meant to provide nourishing moisture to sensitive skin without causing redness or irritation, and is labeled as non-comedogenic. It also contains the rice extract and aloe.
I put a bit of moisturizer on my hand, and the texture was smooth and blended easily. I liked the fact that they basically smelled like nothing. The cleanser is 170g and the moisturizer is only 50g. So you will probably have to buy about two packages of moisturizer for every tube of cleanser. I was also a little bit put off that they had a separate box for the moisturizer.
The cleanser I really liked. It made my skin softer. It is a little thick, but it went on easily and when I rinsed it off my face felt smooth and hydrated.
The moisturizer is nice it is silky smooth, bright white and absorbs quickly. Perfect for applying makeup over it in the morning. Skin feels nice afterwards, but it did get rid of my dry patches. It provided enough moisturizer to help me deal with the cold weather.
I do like the silky texture of the moisturizer, the fact that it is fragrance free, and that it was fast absorbing and non greasy. The line also has Burt’s Bees Sensitive Eye Cream and Burt’s Bees Sensitive Night Cream. So if you are still searching for the right sensitive skin line for you, this is the you can try out.
Some more info from Burt’s Bees on their line:
“The folk’s at Burt’s Bees have formulated their new Natural Skin Solutions for Sensitive Skin line with Cotton Extract because its gentle touch is perfect for sensitive skin. It includes seven “oligosaccharides.” or sugars, that help support the skin barrier, reduce the appearance of skin redness and promote the production of keratin. Keratin is actually the key material making up the outer layer of skin, and it gives skin its strength, flexibility and water retaining capabilities. It also helps carry moisture where it’s most needed….. it can provide all kinds of benefits including:
- Moisturizing the skin
- Increasing the softness and suppleness of skin
- Supporting the skin’s barrier function
- Helping to maintain skin’s natural moisture
- Helping to even out skin tone.”
Burt’s Bee recently conducted a research study on natural skin products and sensitive skin. I got a chance to talk to Dr. Zoe Draelos and ask her a few questions about the study and the results that I want to share with you.
Burt’s Bees nature-based sensitive line outperformed a dermatologist-recommended synthetic control regimen in a study of 120 people with clinically diagnosed sensitive skin from rosacea, atopic dermatitis/eczema, or cosmetic intolerance.
What is the philosophy for sensitive skins during different times of year?
Dr. Draelos stated that if you have sensitive skin you need to take care of it all year long regardless of the weather. You need to think about where you are living and the humidity. You should use a moisturizer that is a lotion in the Winter because it has more water. In the Summer you should use a cream because it has more water.
What are key recommendations that you make to young women in taking care of their skin?
In your 20’s you go through hormonal changes and need to excellent skin care. You need to take care of the microbes in the skin that keeps the balance on your skin. You need a good cleanser. Make sure you use a moisturizer with an SPF 30+, when you are young, that way you will not have skin damage later in life. The phrase no pain no gain does not apply to skin.
Nature Based products have function and are fashionable. We are going to see more dermatologists moving closer to nature skin care.
This was so educational for me.
