Did you know that 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime? Me either. 1 in 8 people is a big number. Knowing this information, I think it is important that we all discuss and bring awareness to breast cancer. This year has been my year of advocacy and I have been working with the local hospital to bring more awareness to cancer screening and care.
In April, we had the annual Relay on the Red. It is an event that supports survivors and their families and encourages those that are still on their journey is that they can make. I wanted to do something special for the survivors that we were honoring this year so I reached out to Lilly Pulitzer. Lilly Pulitzer designs a Breast Cancer Awareness print every October.
When you finish cancer treatment and have to re-enter the workforce it can be difficult. The survivors got to select something that would make their return a little brighter. The recipients were so honored to receive the special piece of clothing. The tears were flowing. It was a chance for them to get back some self-confidence that cancer had tried to take from them.
In addition, raising awareness about breast cancer is great, but it’s important to take action too. Supporting companies that collaborate with BCRF during Breast Cancer Awareness Month assures your purchase makes a true impact. I can’t wait to see what new print Lilly Pulitzer will come out with this October.
