Growing up my parents are instilled a strong sense of respect for nature and the animals that inhabit it to my sister and I. We would sit for hours and go through the nature cards and talk about the nature and the animals that were endangered and how we could help. It was an honor to attend the premiere of the new Disneynature movie? I hope that this movie will again raise awareness of the planet and what we need to do to protect it.
This is the eighth movie in the Disneynature series, and one thing remains the same, part of the first week of ticket sales goes to help:
“Penguins” continues Disneynature’s conservation tradition: for every ticket sold opening week (April 17-23, 2019), Disneynature will make a donation to the Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN) to help protect penguins across the southern hemisphere
Narrated by Ed Helms (“The Office,” “The Hangover” trilogy,”The Daily Show with John Stewart”), Disneynature’s all-new feature film “Penguins” is a coming-of-age story about an Adélie penguin named Steve who joins millions of fellow males in the icy Antarctic spring on a quest to build a suitable nest, find a life partner and start a family. None of it comes easily for him, especially considering he’s targeted by everything from killer whales to leopard seals, who unapologetically threaten his happily ever after.
The story chronicles a year in the life of a five year old Adelie penguin called Steve. We get to watch the actual process of this penguin’s journey to fatherhood and beyond. The struggles are real, from finding a rare spot on the ground with no snow, to collecting enough pebbles for a suitable nest. And watch out, some lazier penguins might steal your pebbles instead of going out to collect their own!
Once Steve has a suitable nest prepared, he begins the mating call that will hopefully attract a female that will mate with him! Like awkward teenagers, Steve and Adeline meet and form a bond! And before you know it, two little ones are on the way, two eggs have been laid. And while it may be Spring, the winds are harsh as the cold air and warm air meet. Steve is out fishing at sea as Adeline becomes covered in snow trying to keep their eggs warm enough to survive eh the harsh Antarctic weather!
Once the eggs hatch, the race is on to quadruple their hatchlings size so that they can survive their first Winter. Mom and dad take time rushing out to feed in the ocean, and then coming home to feed their young.
As Winter approaches, the young chicks must learn how to swim so that they can spend the Winter in the ocean, but getting to the ocean is not so easy. The go from fighting off birds who want to eat them, to tiger seals who need a yummy meal!
The movie is visually stunning, it was a treat to be able to sit and watch these penguins survive the harsh climate of Antarctica from our cushiony seats in the IMAX theater. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough, it is a visual treat, and also a beautiful love story!
From the filmmaking team behind “Bears” and “Chimpanzee,” Disneynature’s “Penguins” opens in theaters and in IMAX® April 17, 2019.
