Nadya Nguyen decided to finally act on her long-time passion for fashion and founded Cobalt Street, a Chicago-based socially and environmentally conscious clothing brand. Though Nadya had experience running a company from a previous business venture, this was her first time taking on fashion.
Fashion is one of the most environmentally taxing industries in the world. For their styles, they research hundreds of different fabrics to find those that have minimal impact on the environment without compromising on comfort or quality of the style.
Each of Cobalt Street’s clothing items is made with sustainably sourced, eco-friendly materials.
TENCEL™ Lyocell is made of cellulose, a natural component of wood, making it compostable and biodegradable, earning it the USDA BioPreferred® designation. Production of TENCEL™ uses significantly less water and land compared to that of other fibers, such as regular cotton. We use TENCEL™ fabric blends as the primary component in these pieces.
Organic Cotton is grown without toxic and persistent pesticides, which leaves the soil, air, and water free from harmful contaminants. Production of organic cotton uses 88% less water and 62% less energy compared to conventional cotton. We use organic cotton as the primary component in these pieces.
BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) Cotton is cotton farmed by licensed BCI Farmers. Production of regular cotton is often vulnerable to environmental degradation and poor working conditions. BCI helps farmers grow cotton in a way that reduces stress on the local environment and improves the livelihoods and welfare of farming communities by creating long-term change. We use BCI Cotton as the primary component in these pieces.
Recycled Nylon diverts waste from landfills and the ocean. Recycled nylon consumes fewer resources(such as water, fuel, and energy) in production than virgin nylon. Although the process of recycling nylon is still more expensive than virgin nylon, significant research is being conducted on improving the quality and reducing the costs of recycling. We use recycled nylon as the main component in our mesh linings.
Non-mulesed Wool is sourced from certified non-mulesing farms with strict animal welfare standards. The yarn preparation is compliant with REACH, ensuring no hazardous industrial chemicals are used in the process. It is then woven in environmentally-aware rapier looms in a production facility with a life-long commitment to preserving its local environment.
Each clothing item is designed with an eye toward size-inclusivity. I love that they have something for everyone which is important in this climate.
Some of Cobalt Street’s most popular items include long dresses, like the Black BCI Cotton Square Neck A-Line Mid-Calf Dress and the 3/4 Sleeve BCI Cotton Boatneck Mid-Calf Flared Dress, as well as their body-con style dresses, including the 3/4 Sleeve TENCEL™ Lyocell Midi Bodycon Dress and the TENCEL™ Lyocell & Merino Wool Sleeveless Midi Bodycon Dress.
Cobalt Street operates entirely online, which allows the company to appeal to a broad audience.
Those two factors — sustainability and environmentalism — are woven into the very fabric of each of Cobalt Street’s garments. Part of the reason behind the founding of Cobalt Street was the exploitation and pollution.
This brand has the perfect pieces that you should have in your capsule wardrobe it is versatile and super comfortable. It can take you from the office to going out with friends.
