A few years ago I crossed off something off my bucket list and it was swimming. Growing up in Brooklyn, it was difficult to find places to go swimming so it was not a sport that my parents got us into, unlike my older sister who learned to swim in the Atlantic Ocean in Guyana. When I began to learn it was hard, because I was scared of the water, and it took awhile.
I strongly believe that children should learn to swim at a young age when they are not afraid of the water and their association with it is fun in the tub. Also every year we hear at this time how many children fall into a pool and drown because they don’t know how to swim. If they learn to swim; panic will not set in should something happen and they will have a better chance to survive and as parents we need to equip our kids with all the tools in life.
When I received the email from MomTrends to attend this event and meet five-time Olympic swimmer Dana Torres. I could not fill out the form to attend fast enough.
Swim Today was on hand to talk to us about their new promotion they are inviting new swimmers and families to experience the sport with incentives like customized swim caps, free trial periods and promotional materials from kits sent to 1,500 swim teams to use locally. Swim Today is a first of its kind marketing collaboration within the swimming industry. It is a joint, industry effort created to promote and grow participation in the sport of swimming. Swim Today focuses on the benefits of swimming, fun, fitness, friendships, self-confidence, teamwork, gaol-setting, time management, lifelong participation, swimming’s many health benefits and low rate of injury.
Olympic Gold-Medal winner Dara Torres then took and shared her love of swimming and being a mom with us. She told us how she kept swimming when she was pregnant and how she just found herself going back to the trials and then the Olympics and it paid off she won five medals. I loved the relax way she spoke with the audience and answered our questions.
