Are you gearing up for Halloween? When I was at Walmart, I browsed through the Halloween aisles and decided to put together a BOOKit. I am so excited about participating in this #BOOItForward campaign this year. The way it works is very simple, you simply BOO someone (surprise them with some delicious candy and a printable card) and then they #BOOItForward (pass on the surprise to another person). We decided to start doing this a few years ago after we just moved to the neighborhood and wanted to get to know other people, it was a great icebreaker and fun to guess who was doing it.
I picked up a bag of Mars Mixed candy and a bag of Wrigley Monster Stash. I also found some cute Canada Dry monster soda cans.
Okay let’s get our supplies and ingredients to put together our Spooky Cauldron BooKits. Here is a simple tutorial.
First you need to get your BOO cards, which you can find and print here
Once you have printed them out, fold the “You’ve been BOO’d” greeting card (page 2) and tape the openings together. Cut out the “We’ve been BOO’d sign and include that as well so the lucky family you BOO can just tape it on the window or door. Include the card and when gifting BOO bundles.
Supplies
- Cauldrons
- Canada Dry Halloween Cans
- Mars Mixed Candy
- Halloween Straws
- Stickers
- Sprinkles
- Icing
- Microwavable Bowl
- Fog
Let’s first make our fog for our cauldron to get that smoky feeling and doing it without a fog machine:
How to Make Dry Ice Fog
To create a fog effect with dry ice, you will need:
- A large container
- How water
- Dry ice
Make sure to follow all dry ice safe handling precautions
Fill a metal or plastic container half full of hot water and add a few pieces of dry ice every 5 to 10 minutes. As the water cools. You will need to add more hot water to maintain fog effect. As a rule, one pound of dry ice will create 2-3 minutes of fog effect. The hotter the water, the more fog.
When you place dry ice into warm water or hot water, clouds of white fog are created. This white fog is condensed water vapor, mixed in with invisible CO2. Why are we making dry ice because it give the cauldron a spooky feeling and it gives kids a great way to learn about science. Who doesn’t love that smoke coming up from a cauldron.
Spooky Cauldrons
Melt your chocolate in a Microwavable Bowl for about two minutes. I love using M&M’s®, SNICKERS®, TWIX®, MILKY WAY®, 3 MUSKETEERS®. We are melting the chocolate so it is easier to scoop into the cauldron.
- Be careful chocolate will be hot. Scoop it out into the cauldron.
- Add Halloween for that spooky stirring effect. Our straws give you that feeling that you are witch stirring the spooky cauldron, the kids love it.
- Melt your Marshmallows to the top of your chocolate to give it that gooey effect. Note if you ever have a sore throat, you can use marshmallows to coat your throat since it has gelatin in it.
- Add Sprinkles and Icing to mixture to make it your own. All of these add to you cauldron and give you a more creative ability to have fun and make it more crazy. Kids love to get creative and it so fun to eat.
- Decorate your cauldron with stickers
Assemble everything and now it time to deliver your gifts under the cover of darkness. It is so much fun to leave the presents for people and the secret aspect adds an element of surprise and excitement. It gives everyone a chance to be generous and experience the fun of giving and being generous.
