Have you ever slept on bamboo sheets before? Well neither had I and now I don’t know why I hadn’t before. So soft and so beautiful to sleep on, Ettitude is an Australian sustainable lifestyle label. This label offers beautifully designed bamboo sheets, heavenly soft organic bamboo bedding, and homeware that is kind on your skin and the environment.
I got a chance to interview Phoebe Yu, Founder of ettitude works directly with manufacturers to design, and create a beautiful range of modern basic bed linen using sustainable design, technology and organic bamboo. The sheets, made from 100% organic bamboo lyocell are as fine as 1000 count Egyptian cotton, but the manufacturing process uses two thirds less water and doesn’t use harmful chemicals. Phoebe spoke to us about her leadership journey from China to Australia, and how she gives back.
WHEN YOU CAME TO AUSTRALIA FROM CHINA YOU EXPERIENCED “AWARENESS SHOCK” ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES FACING OUR PLANET. AT THAT TIME YOU WERE PART OF AN INDUSTRY WHICH PRODUCED DISPOSABLE HOLIDAY PRODUCTS THAT GAVE A RETAILER HIGH MARGINS, BUT WEREN’T GREAT FOR EARTH. WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THAT INDUSTRY TO CREATE A SUCCESSFUL, SUSTAINABLE, ECO-FRIENDLY BUSINESS?
The things I learned during that period of time was how to work and communicate with suppliers. They are happy to go for the eco-friendly option if clients want that and are willing to pay for it. Normally, it won’t cost too much extra. Suppliers also like to work with clients who are happy to pay a bit more. They look for quality long-term relationships, which delivers slightly better margins than working with big chain stores, who just want the cheapest price on the market.
WHY ARE YOU DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING?
WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE?
How to scale the company quicker and expand into the international market.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
That customers love our products and do a lot of word of mouth marketing for us. Nothing makes me feel happier than reading a really nice review written by our customers thanking us for creating this product.
Now let’s take a look at products.
Ettitude Sheets
All Ettitude products are made from the finest organic bamboo that is grown and produced without the use of any chemicals. The feel is luxurious and the look is so soft and inviting. Ettitude are allergen and irritant-free, perfect for people with sensitive skin, allergy, eczema, dermatitis, acne-prone skin, chemo patients and even newborns. If you are looking for an ethical and sustainable bed linens, you need to look no further. I’ve found the perfect bedding, which is soft and luxurious and oh so sustainable. Just take a look at their gorgeous product. I am sure you will soon love them too.
When I found ettitude I was over the moon. I had been looking a while for a good sustainable bed linen option. We spend one-third of our day wrapped in our sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers, so we want these products to be good for us, and good for the planet. Most conventional sheets are treated with formaldehyde and other chemicals so that they can be wrinkle-free. This isn’t good for our health, or the environment.
When it comes to sustainable options, organic cotton bedding is becoming quite easy to find. Organic cotton is a wonderful textile and a fine choice for sheets, but it is a very thirsty crop that takes valuable land and water away from food crops. Bamboo lyocell is a much better option.
Bamboo can be grown on marginal land that isn’t suitable for food and isn’t a water-intensive crop. If you have been following my textile reviews, you will know that bamboo fabric isn’t always sustainable. But this is because the most bamboo fabric is viscose, which uses harmful chemicals in processing, and discharges these as waste (sometimes treated, sometimes not). However, bamboo lyocell is different. It uses a closed loop system to capture and reuse the processing solvents. This means that far fewer inputs are needed, and none is released into the waterways. Furthermore, the solvents used to make lyocell are organic and not harmful to the environment. ettitude uses bamboo lyocell to create an amazingly sustainable bed linen option.
ettitude is an Australian-based company that manufactures with carefully selected factories in China, which specialize in producing this environmentally safe textile, and have guaranteed worker protections. ettitude is so committed to their environmental standards that they also have carbon neutral web-hosting. The company also has a dedicated program to give back. They donate $10 from every sheet set in the Bondi collection to the Australian charity Swags for the Homeless and have funded the cost of more than 100 swags to date. They also contribute 10% of the Moonshine Collections total sales (note that is total sales, which is much better than total profits) to One Girl, a Melbourne based charity which funds education for girls in Africa.
I absolutely adore the sheets that I recently invested in. They feel like the ultimate luxury, but without the luxury price tag. A good sheet set will last you 5-10 years, so it is worth choosing well. The ettitude sheets are the most comfortable sheets I have ever slept in. They meet my highest standards for sustainability. The color range is simply gorgeous.
