A week ago I was lucky enough to attend an event and spend some time chatting with the pr rep for a line of bedding that I know all of you are going to love.

Brooklinen was founded in 2014, by a husband and wife who simply wanted a good set of sheets. All they could find was a marketplace where quality came with a price. Rich and Vicki took a startup approach and found out what made the sheets so expensive. The answers were overhead expenses, like middlemen, storefronts, manufacturing and other things that had nothing to do with the sheets.
It is not often that you get an opportunity to ask poignant questions to the one of the co-founders, but I got the chance to ask Vicky Fulop some and here responses were insightful and profound. I wanted to share them with you.
1. What makes you proud of this brand?
I’m proud of the fact that Rich and I have been able to bring our creative vision to life and have people fall in love with it! Our customers and community really get it and love Brooklinen products, and it feels crazy that that is real. I’m also proud that we’ve created jobs (we’ve grown from 2 people to 18 in the past year). I never imagined that I would have the privilege to make a living by sharing something I design with people, or be able to create even one job, so that and the passion people have for our products is incredibly rewarding and humbling.
2. Why did you start the brand?
We started the brand a little over two years ago because we couldn’t find what we were personally searching for – beautiful, luxurious bedding that didn’t cost a fortune. We felt stuck between two options – very expensive high-end sheets that cost $500+, or big-box stores where the options were confusing and often misrepresenting the quality of the product (via soft-touch coatings that wash off, “creative math” thread counts, and so on).
We began talking to friends and shoppers, as well as researching the industry, and discovered that many people felt the same way we did. We also found that retailers were selling bedding at up to a 10x markup, and that we could cut out the middlemen and create a well-designed, high-end product at a much better price. So we set out to do just that – our goal was to deliver something that was beautiful and effortless, leaving you with money to burn.
3. Where do you see the brand going in the future?
I’d love to continue to make beautiful, high-end products accessible in ways they were not before! We’ve got some exciting things up our sleeve, stay tuned :).
