On July 22, 2016, Disney premiered its first Latina princess, Elena of Avalor. Latinos finally have a strong princess to call our own and that is something to celebrate. We were very excited to celebrate Princess Elena of Avalor and have a royal viewing party in her honor. Together with my friends we watched the first and second episodes in awe of the amazing young princess. She’s intelligent, caring and strong.
Watching Elena I got a chance to reflect on my own childhood growing up. My mother was always at my side. Throughout my childhood I can’t remember a time when my mother was not there. She taught me to read and write and when it was time for me to go off to school she made sure I was well prepared. Every day she would walk my younger sister and I to school and pick us up, always making sure that we valued education. When I was younger I was sick a lot and missed a lot of time in school, my mother encouraged me to continue to study and made sure that I did not fall behind.
When it was time to go off to high school, my mother encouraged me to go to a high school in Manhattan, she knew that I wanted to pursue finance and supported my decision; even though I would have to travel by subway on my own. During my four years, at Murry Bergtraum High School my mom continued to tell me that I could do anything and wanted me to join all the clubs and participate in all the activities that I could. She attended my events and cheered me on, continuing to show me that she loved me. I graduated, went on to college then graduate school and then into the workforce, my mother continued to be me my personal cheerleader. Telling me that I can always be a leader even in dealing in industry’s that were dominated by males. I learned to get their respect, because my mother always believed that I could show them how good I was. Like Elena I had to listen and not always jump to conclusions, but once I did I was able to figure out what to do. I became a leader and now I give back to my community, to help others because of my mom and her wise advice.
Throughout of life, we have struggles but with support and guidance we can always be leaders and help others, like Elena who has our council I had my mom, and I would not be where I am out with her.
I’m excited to see where adventure takes Elena and I hope you watch along with us! Make sure to tune into the Disney Channel each week to follow Elena of Avalor’s latest royal adventures! Elena of Avalor airs on the Disney Channel on Fridays at 7:30pm ET/6:30 pm CT and 7:30 pm PT!
